DMV Motorcycle Testing and Certification
In the state of Colorado, you can add a motorcycle endorsement to your license in one of two ways:
- Enroll and pass a Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) Basic RiderCourse℠
- Learn to ride on your own and pass the required tests
Enroll and pass a Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) Basic RiderCourse℠
- Enroll in a Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) Training course.
- After successful completion of the course, present your MSF certification card at a driver license office. When you present your MSF certification card at a driver license office, the motorcycle written and driving tests are waived.
- Pay the fee to add the motorcycle endorsement to your license.
The Rider's Edge® New Rider Course is a certified MSF course and presents MSF certification cards upon successful completion of the course.

Please Note: per Colorado law, minors under 18 are required to purchase and hold a motorcycle instruction permit for 12 months before adding the motorcycle endorsement to their license. Minors under 16 must be under the direct supervision of the person signing the Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (DR 2460) or the motorcycle instructor while driving a motorcycle.
Learn to ride on your own and pass the required tests
- Pass the motorcycle written test at a driver's license office.
- Purchase a motorcycle instruction permit from the driver's license office.
- Pass a motorcycle driving test with a 3rd-party tester.
- Pay the fee at the driver's license office to add the motorcycle endorsement to your license.
Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson is a certified Testing Site. The DMV motorcycle driving test can be administered at our dealership by contacting Jack Arnold at (720) 272-5869. The fee is $40 (cash only, please). You will need to have your valid motorcycle intruction permit to show the tester before you can be tested.
If you need a motorcycle to ride to complete the test, you can rent a Buell® Blast® (492cc, one cylinder training vehicle) from Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson for a fee of $25. Please notify your tester when making your appointment that you will need to rent a Buell® Blast®.
Testing hours are extremely flexible if there is no need to rent the Buell® Blast®. If a rental is required, tests will need to be scheduled during the hours the dealership is open.
