Rider’s Edge® New Rider Course Requirements
When you enroll in the Rider's Edge® New Rider Course, you will take part in an intensive three-day course designed to teach you the ins and outs of correct riding practices … everything from proper mental preparation to panic-situation maneuvers.
Once you have passed the Rider's Edge® New Rider Course written test and riding skills evaluation, you will receive an official MSF RiderCourse℠ Completion Card that exempts you from the Colorado state written and riding exams. Passing the course also usually entitles you to a discount on your motorcycle insurance (check with your insurance agent for further details).
More important than any of that, though, is the knowledge and that you have the skills and information that you need to handle any situation you may encounter on the road.
Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson's Rider's Edge® New Rider Courses are held every other week (weather permitting) in the spring and fall and every week in the summer. Class sessions are Thursday evening and Saturday and Sunday (all day). Remember, all class sessions are mandatory, so make sure the course will work with your schedule. Class sizes are small. There will be no more than 12 people per class, so you can be certain to get plenty of individualized training.
In order to take the Rider's Edge® New Rider Course, there are a few requirements. You will need:
- To know how to ride a bicycle — You must know how to ride a bicycle in order to balance the motorcycle while it is in motion.
- A valid automobile driver's license or learner's permit — You must have either a valid automobile driver's license or a valid learner's permit in order to participate in the Rider's Edge New Rider Course.
- A DOT approved helmet — You must have a DOT (Department of Transportation) approved helmet to protect your head in the event of a fall. No "novelty" type helmets will be allowed. If you do not own an approved motorcycle helmet, one will be provided for you.
- Eye protection — Eye protection can consist of a helmet faceshield, sunglasses, goggles, or prescription glasses.
- A heavy long sleeve shirt or a jacket — You must wear a heavy long sleeve shirt or jacket at all times when riding the motorcycle. A leather jacket is preferred, but is not necessary.
- Long pants — You must wear long pants while on the motorcycle in order to protect your legs from the heat of the engine or in case of a fall. Jeans or leather pants are preferred.
- Over the ankle boots or shoes — Wearing boots or shoes that extend over your ankle bone must be worn and are necessary to offer a measure of protection against sprained ankles and other injuries in the event of a fall. Boots with rubber soles are preferred.
- Full fingered gloves — You must wear full fingered gloves (no "fingerless" gloves allowed) when riding the motorcycle. This will offer your hands some protection in the event of a fall.
You won't be allowed to participate if you do not have the proper protective gear. If you need any of the above equipment, there will be time at the beginning of the class to purchase these materials.
During the course you will be riding a 492cc Buell® Blast® motorcycle, what some people have called "the perfect beginner's motorcycle". The Blast® is a responsive mid-weight streetbike that's designed with the novice rider in mind. But make no mistake, the Blast® is a real-world bike that can take you anywhere you want to go.
Best of all, since the use of the motorcycle is provided in the class costs, you don't have to commit yourself to buying a motorcycle before you learn to ride one.
The Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson Rider's Edge® New Rider Course costs $325 for the three day session. Three days of real-world lessons and riding skills taught by experienced riders and seasoned instructors (some of whom are veteran motorcycle police officers) ensuring that the training you receive is the most up-to-date and effective in Colorado.
As an added bonus, if, at the end of your training class (or within one year of completing your class) you decide to purchase a motorcycle from Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson, $100 of the $325 you spent on your class will be applied to the purchase of your new motorcycle. Also, if you have, within the last year, purchased a motorcycle from Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson, the cost of the class is reduced to $225.
